Montreux 2001

Five years ago (July 7, 2001) was the last time that Jimmy Page and Robert Plant performed together on stage. Photos from that gig appear below from Sam Rapallo's well-designed Electric Magic site.

The short set that they played was incredible; they pulled out songs by Arthur Crudup and Howlin' Wolf, as well as the emotional Heart in Your Hand from their 1998 effort, Walking Into Clarksdale. The sweetest treat of the night came from the first-ever live performance of Led Zeppelin's Candy Store Rock, from 1976's Presence.

Page and Plant were scheduled to appear together once again this year at the Montreux Jazz Festival on June 30, but Page canceled at the last minute. Organizers cited 'medical reasons' as the cause for the withdrawal, but Page friend and photographer extraordinaire Ross Halfin reported on his blog that he and Page had dinner that night, apparently putting to rest any concern that the cancellation was due to something dire. No one seems to know exactly what the problem could be. Page has not toured regularly since his 2000 jaunt with The Black Crowes (the last leg of which was canceled due to Page's back trouble). In the intervening years, Jimmy has appeared for a small number of one-off performances (even playing a solo instrumental Dazed and Confused on the same night and venue as Plant and the Strange Sensation performed for a charity gig in February 2002; the pair did not play together) and has hinted at making a new album, but aside from undertaking the Led Zeppelin DVD and How the West Was Won projects (released in May 2003), we've heard little else from the Page camp.
